check your facts

Um, Sam, not to be rude, but, check your facts. MLK, Jr was a Republican. Most of the civil rights leaders were.

Nope. Sorry. He opposed Goldwater in '64 saying his election would be really bad (paraphrasing). In '68 he was going to run at the top of the Peace and Freedom anti-war ticket and was deeply impacted by the work of Norman Thomas (Socialist Party president), of whom he wrote the '65 article "The Bravest Man I Ever Met". My mistake here was that I noted him as a "registered" member. Cornel West described him that way in a speech I heard and I should have double-checked. But there are numerous well-reputed reports of him -- in private -- endorsing democratic socialism. Among them are many statement of a guaranteed wage and more...

By the way, these quibbles might be best disputed in comments.

Who a person endorses doesn't change his party registration. I'm a registered Democrat, eg, but I haven't voted for a Democrat in a national election EVER

Yes. Conceded and corrected. 'Registered' is problematic and I know many 'registered' dems who are functional republicans. But my amendment stands on its own, I think.

"Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane."

-- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

How Republican was that?

You assume that Republicans don't agree with that statement. We simply disagree on how to accomplish the ends of establishing a just health care system.

Actually, it had nothing to do with the issues of our day. But JD is right. In the south the Dixiecrats didn't allow 'colored people' to run for office, so, they ran as Republicans. Plain and simple.
